This is the story about country boy meeting city girl. Which was really not that big of a deal because the first 35 years of our marriage we lived in the city, raised two boys and did all the fun city stuff. But, as it got closer to retirement my husband said, “I want to retire to the country.” I thought it sounded like a great idea - peaceful, surrounded by nature. So, we started looking for land and in 2016 we purchased 23 acres. The property was a wreck but over the next few years we started clearing it off, planting fruit trees, adding fences and in 2020 we were ready to start building our house. Then my husband said, “Well, we need goats and if we have goats, then we need a livestock guardian dog plus we need a barn and of course we need a barn cat to keep the mice down.” So . . . my city girl side kicked in - because I was terrified of dogs, didn’t care for cats and sure didn’t like getting messy. But I believe God has a sense of humor because He took away my fear of dogs, we adopted a rescue cat that I absolutely love and now I can muck out a goat barn with the best of them.

In December 2020 we got our first goats (Mini-Sable - which is a mix of Saanen and Nigerian Dwarf) and since then we have added Nubians, Nigerian Dwarf and our concentration now is raising Mini-Nubians. We started milking our goats in 2021 and because we have several family members with skin issues, I started looking into making a more natural soap using our goat’s milk. Not only do we have goats and dogs but we raise chickens for eggs and meat and of course every farm needs crazy guineas running around. I never would have thought our retirement years would be like this but we love it. One thing you can count on with God is that you can never predict when He will change the course of your life and lead you down a path of blessings you couldn’t imagine.

Isaiah 43: 19 “Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it?”
